The Start Feels Hard for Everyone 😮💨
When people first come to us, they’re often in a place where motivation feels nonexistent. Their energy is low, they don’t feel disciplined, and they’ve either never started—or they’ve tried so many “health kicks” that just left them feeling miserable and overwhelmed.
Some come in stuck in the pattern of starting and stopping. They’ve never really been able to stick to something. And when they look at people who exercise consistently—week after week, year after year—they assume whatever those people have, they must not.
But what they don’t realize is… the people who make it look effortless now? They didn’t have it either. They just built it. Over time.
At the start of your exercise journey, it’s normal to not have the energy for it. It’s normal to not have the desire, the motivation, or even the capacity for it. Especially if you’ve never done it before—or if your only experiences with exercise were too intense and left you feeling defeated and wrecked.
So it makes sense that you might believe you’re just not the kind of person who sticks to a workout routine. Not like your neighbor who’s been waking up at 4:30 AM to hit their group class for the last 20 years. Or your partner, who hasn’t missed a gym session in 35 years.
You Don’t Need Motivation to Start 💪
But here’s the thing: if someone comes in and makes a verbal commitment to ease into a strength training routine with us—no contracts, no pressure, just a real “I’m ready to try”—within a few sessions, a few weeks, maybe a month… they start to feel better.
✨ Less aches and pains
✨ More energy
✨ Better sleep
That tiny bit of change becomes motivating. Because when you feel better, it’s easier to want to keep going.
And what’s even more motivating? The first time you take a break—vacation, holidays, sick days—and you feel all those old symptoms creep back in. The low energy. The tight hips. The achey low back.
Now you know how much better you feel when you’re consistent… and that alone becomes the motivation to stick with it.
So in the beginning? It might require some vulnerability. You might not know if this is going to work. You might feel unsure if this version of fitness is for you.
But if you’re willing to lean into the discomfort of trying, and you stick with it long enough to feel a difference—
you’ll eventually get to a place where you don’t let yourself fall too far off track.
Here’s a personal example:
I jokingly say I live the grandma life 90% of the time. I go to bed early, get 8 hours of sleep, eat the same foods, and limit my alcohol. And for the most part, I feel pretty great.
But recently, I had a stretch of birthday dinners and celebrations. Multiple dinners in a row. Multiple drinks in a short period. And after just a few days, I felt the difference.
My mental clarity was off. My energy dipped. I didn’t feel like myself. That contrast? Super motivating.
It reminded me why I usually choose to live the grandma life. But if I had never known what it felt like to feel this good, I wouldn’t have that contrast. And without that, the motivation to get back on track wouldn’t be as strong.
So if you don’t feel motivated to change something right now, maybe the next step isn’t waiting for motivation. Maybe it’s taking action so motivation has a chance to build.
And instead of seeing inconsistency or a break in your routine as failure—see it as a necessary part of the process.
Eventually, you’ll be the neighbor who gets their gym sessions in year after year. Maybe not at 5am 😉 …but still consistently, in your own way.
